Portugal Crowned “Best Destination in Europe” at 2025 World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal solidifies its status as Europe’s top tourism destination after sweeping accolades at the awards gala in Sardinia.

The country has been awarded the prestigious title of “Europe’s Leading Destination 2025” at the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony, held on 22 October at the Forte Village Resort in Sardinia, Italy.

A Moment of National Pride

The announcement comes as a significant milestone for Portuguese tourism. Commenting on the award, Pedro Machado, Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, stated that the accolade “reflects the work, dedication and quality of all the professionals who, every day, make tourism one of the main pillars of our economy.”

Meanwhile, Turismo de Portugal President Carlos Abade emphasised that the recognition “demonstrates Portugal’s great capacity to establish itself as one of the best tourist destinations in Europe.”

What the Award Means

The title of “Europe’s Leading Destination” is the headline prize at the World Travel Awards, which are widely regarded as the “Oscars” of the travel and tourism industry. This year, the ceremony brought together hotel groups, destinations, airlines, and tour operators from across the continent.

Portugal’s win acknowledges not just its beautiful landscapes, historic cities and Atlantic coastline, but also the strategic efforts in infrastructure, hospitality quality, transport connections and sustainable tourism growth.

Highlighted Portuguese Winners

  • Alongside the main destination award, the archipelago of Madeira won “Europe’s Leading Island Destination 2025”.

  • The Portuguese city of Porto was recognised as “Europe’s Leading City Destination 2025”.

  • And Lisbon, the Capital, won the Europe’s Leading City Break Destination 2025

What This Means for Sports Tours and Events

For organisers of sports tours, training camps and international tournaments like those managed by Move Sports, the award underscores Portugal’s appeal as a destination choice. The country’s enhanced reputation adds further value when attracting teams, parents, and participants from abroad, who now associate the location with excellence, quality and recognition at the highest level.

Looking Ahead

Portugal’s win also sets a new bar for the country’s tourism ecosystem. Experts say the next phase will focus on maintaining high standards, diversifying visitor markets and increasing off-season travel, all while preserving the culture, authenticity and welcoming image that helped secure the award.

As Portugal basks in this achievement, the global travel community will watch how it leverages this momentum to benefit destinations, sports‑tourism events and international visitors alike.
